On the occasion of the Quartier des Bains common opening night in Geneva, Mitterrand+Cramer/Design inaugurate a solo exhibition, with a complete new collection by Maarten Baas.
Grey Derivations, is co-produced by the gallery and the designer and sets up a new milestone for both of them.
For Maarten Baas first, since the creations by this young contemporary design star are all the more awaited that his recognition has recently enhanced by a mid-career retrospective at the Stedelijk Museum 's-Hertogenbosch (running until May 24th, 2010) and his election as the Designer of the Year 2009 at Design Miami/.
Then for Mitterrand+Cramer/Design, which after exhibiting Tom Dixon, Studio Makkink & Bey and Studio Job add another very big name of design who grants the gallery with his trust by accepting to participate to this recent program.
This exhibition was an opportunity for Maarten Baas and the gallery to question the edition process in relation to the production process. This lead to the conclusion that this specific series should stay very unique considering the hundred of crafting hours which were spent on each piece making the idea of an edition a nonsense.
Therefore, apart from the Grey Derivations Desk Light which was partially produced using a mould, all other five works from the series are handmade unique pieces, with one artist proof which will be slightly different and exclusively produced for Museums or prominent collections.
This approach is close to Maarten’s way of working, making all pieces in his own studio, a farm in the Dutch countryside which allows him to work in a spontaneous and intuitive style. This, in combination with high quality craftsmanship is the focus of the intriguing Grey Derivations collection.
The second part of the exhibition, installed in another part of the gallery, consists of a mini-retrospective of Maarten's previous series including Smoke, Sculpt, Real Time and Clay.
